Firstly, we have the Ikan Masin (salted fish) A combination of salted fish with the local spices result in a distinctive aroma when they are cooked (Willie,2012).When the people have had too much of red meat or chicken, a change in the diet involving salted fish usually will bring back the jaded appetite (Pickles and Spices, 2012)
Secondly, would definitely be the Belacan (shrimp paste). Belacan is used in countless local dishes: sambal belacan, laksa, belacan fried chicken, sambal tumis, fried cincaru, satay sauce and yummy rojak. It has a strong fishy smell similar to Ikan Masin. (Great Penang, 2012)
